April 15th, 2011 will forever have a very special significance to my family. It was a day that my nephew Nathan Alexander Smith was born, as well as the day he went to be with Jesus.
My brother Jason and his wife Emily found out they were having a baby boy in December 2010. That day they also heard the news that he had a genetic disease that would keep him for living more than a few hours or days at most. It goes without saying that they were experiencing grief in that moment that they never expected to experience. It was such heart breaking news for our whole family. But praise the Lord the story does not end there.
Emily had a very healthy pregnancy. Nathan grew bigger and stronger despite the one chamber in his heart and one little lung. God even gave him six fingers on each hand as a trait that we have coined as “Uniquely Nathan.” He had a precious little cleft pallet and a thick head full of hair. He was born on April 15, 2011 and lived on this earth for one hour.
But don’t even begin to think that that was the end of his life. He truly BEGAN LIFE after that. Nathan escaped the trials of this world, the guilt of sin, and the longing every believer has to one day make it HOME. Nathan got to pass into his real Home quicker than most of us do, but I am certain he was not disappointed. Nathan immediately became FULLY ALIVE, his body made complete, and resting in the Savior’s arms. He is experiencing life like none other. He is experiencing fullness of Joy. He is with Jesus.
Today, April 15, 2012 was his 1st Birthday. It is a hard day of remembering the pain of that day, but also a day of celebration knowing that Nathan is healthy, happy, and 100% whole. Oh, what a joyous day it will be when we will all be gathered around the throne, made 100% whole, without stain or blemish, worshipping our Savior Jesus alongside sweet Nathan.
We miss you buddy. You have changed our lives for the better. You have made more of an impact in the one hour of your life than many do in years upon years. I praise God for your parents who are being such an instrument to point others to Christ because of you. Your life, even in death and new life, is bringing glory to God.
Job 1:21 “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.”
